So CM Punk decided to “pull an Austin” and pick up his ball and go home. You know what? Good for him. There have been plenty of reasons circling around on why he decided to just go home, but the one I keep hearing about more than anything is the fact that Batista won the Royal Rumble. While he doesn’t have a problem with the guy, it appears that he is griping about the fact that the guy can come back after a few years and be thrust right into the top spot headlining WrestleMania 30. I understand where he is coming from; part timers come in and make more money than most of the current roster before leaving again giving the full time guys either less pay or a spot off the WrestleMania card altogether.

I knew that a time would come when the part timers coming in would be passé, and that time is NOW. CM Punk made his threat to leave back in 2011 because he didn’t like the way things were going in WWE. Because he made noise, he was given a bigger role, more money, and the longest reign with the WWE Championship in 25 years actually making the championship mean something again. When I look back at that reign, I can see where they sabotaged that also. He was rarely in the main event at PPVs. There was even a time where after he had an awesome match with Daniel Bryan for the championship they followed that up with a Diva’s match afterwards as a subtle way to show Punk that he truly didn’t matter or was looked at as a TRUE main eventer. Of course as we all know, his reign was ended by The Rock so that The Rock can drop the title to John Cena at WrestleMania 29. Cena returned to his status quo spot while The Rock returned to his life as “Hollywood” Dwayne Johnson.

CM Punk asked for change back in 2011, and three years later things are still the same. Same people are in the top spots while “the authority” continues to push anything that is new and fresh for the fans to the wayside in favor of the same old shit that we have been seeing for almost 7 years now. It’s like the creative team is lacking any form of freshness or originality, but at the same time Stephanie McMahon is the head of creative. I am starting to see a trend here! Punk’s departure has supposedly thrown WrestleMania plans into a tailspin which I think is awesome because now after seeing how the people they have in the top spots are getting ZERO reaction, maybe they will be forced to actually come up with something different that the fans actually want to see. Maybe his departure will actually give Punk the change that he has wanted all along (even if he is no longer there), and the same change that we have all wanted as wrestling fans this whole time.

CM Punk is WWE brass’ worst nightmare. He is an employee who doesn’t need them to get ahead. He isn’t a slave to the WWE machine, and he is leaving the company on his own terms. Just like when Stone Cold Steve Austin did it, he saw that what creative had in store didn’t make sense and rolled on. Punk doesn’t need WWE; he has been known to save his money and apparently has more than enough to walk away. What is next for Punk? Maybe as he said in his pipe bomb speech in 2011, he will go wrestle over in New Japan or maybe he will go back to Ring of Honor. I will say this; if this isn’t some work and CM Punk does decide that he is TRULY done with WWE, then he is going to be the hottest free agent in professional wrestling. He may be the face of the franchise that Ring of Honor needs in order to get to that next level or he maybe he will just call it a day and do something totally different outside of the world of professional wrestling. And there is also the possibility that even if he does leave that he can return to WWE later down the road as that company definitely has revolving doors. Whatever he does, I can say that with him being my favorite wrestler that I am all for it.
