Can They Make It Matter?

I am a huge fan of The Undertaker. I always have been. The awesome entrances, the special effects, the music, he truly is an attraction in the world of professional wrestling. He is one of those guys who don’t need to be a champion all the time or be on TV all the time to make draw people to the arena. If you look back at his career, even before the yearly WrestleMania appearance, The Undertaker has always taken a bit of time off and returned when he was needed. He is probably one of the greatest attractions in pro wrestling outside of Andre the Giant.  He is around, but he never wears out his welcome.

As we all know, part of The Undertaker’s attraction was the fact that he had something that he defended every year at WrestleMania. It wasn’t a championship, but a streak. For those of you who don’t reside in this wrestling timeline, The Undertaker had a streak of 21 victories at the grandest stage of them all. Names like Triple H, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, and even “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka became part of something that became a bigger legend as each year went by. At WrestleMania 30, we witnessed as Brock Lesnar used three F5’s to vanquish The Undertaker and his streak once and for all. Brock Lesnar became the 1 in 21-1, and went on to eventually be the current REIGNING AND DEFENDING…well you know the rest; back to The Undertaker.

The Undertaker’s streak was one of the last things that a lot of us believed was real in professional wrestling. I thought he would ride off into the sunset undefeated at WrestleMania, myself! I always said “no one can beat the streak!” WRONG! Now I also felt that if The Undertaker was going to lose, that it was going to be to some young gun. It should have been someone in their prime who could’ve benefited from defeating The Deadman. I was thinking someone like a Roman Reigns or a Cesaro or a…Bray Wyatt. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a huge fan of Bray Wyatt. I enjoy his promos, his presentation, the whole damn package was just spectacular.  He would have been perfect to end the streak of the dead man. Any person who can cut a promo on inanimate objects like a coffin, an urn, or a rocking chair and can make it entertaining deserves a lot of credit.

While I am interested in the match between Bray Wyatt and The Undertaker because it is a fresh match-up, I am wondering what the point of it is? The streak is what made his appearances at WrestleMania special. This match just seems like another match to me. With the streak over, The Undertaker is going to come to the ring as just some old guy with a cool entrance. What is there to gain for Bray Wyatt? Is he gonna call himself the 2 in 22-2? If he wins, then he beat some old guy with a laser show while simultaneously making Brock Lesnar’s win over The Undertaker at least year’s WrestleMania have less impact by default. If he loses, then he lost to some old guy who won’t be on Raw the night after while he has to show up and do some creepy promo explaining his loss. The match is meaningless for both parties. Imagine if The Undertaker had gone into this match undefeated, and Bray Wyatt defeated him. That is a gimmick that Wyatt would have harped on and on about for years.  It would have made him the new “phenom” in the WWE. The match itself could have been a passing of the torch, if you will.

I am just wondering what the point of all this is? Will there be further story-line after this? Or is The Undertaker just going to go back home? If the angle continues then maybe the match at Mania would be justified, it’s just that WrestleMania should be a place where angles and feuds are settled not started. What I want to see most is who will the fans side with? Some of us are from the days when those cellphones in the crowd for Bray Wyatt were lighters in the crowd for The Undertaker! In a way, I am torn since I am a fan of both guys. What do you folks think? Do you think there is a proper endgame to this match? If so, what is it?
